From Classroom to Virtual Reality: My Journey Creating Discover VR
Hello! I’m Liam, founder of Discover VR and a former classroom teacher turned mobile virtual reality specialist. After more than twelve years in education, I recognised that while traditional teaching methods are valuable, there was an opportunity to bring immersive learning experiences into schools in an entirely new way.
Why I Left the Classroom — And Why I Started a Mobile VR Company
In my teaching career I saw lessons where students were engaged—but I also saw the ceiling of what textbooks, videos and white-board discussions could deliver. I often asked myself: What if students could actually step inside a volcano? Explore the deep ocean? Walk on Mars?
That question led me to start Discover VR—a company delivering mobile VR workshops in schools, offering virtual reality in schools, interactive VR education and curriculum-linked VR experiences designed to captivate learners of all ages.
A Leap of Faith
Leaving teaching wasn’t easy. I loved my students, my colleagues, and the school community that had shaped who I was. But I also knew I had something new to offer — something that could enhance learning across subjects and schools.
In 2022, I took the leap and launched Discover VR, a mobile virtual reality company that brings immersive workshops directly into schools. We load up our VR headsets, travel to classrooms, and turn ordinary lessons into extraordinary experiences.
Why schools love Discover VR
One of the things I’m most proud of is how accessible Discover VR is. Because we’re a mobile service, schools don’t need to invest in expensive equipment or technical setup — we bring everything with us.
Our workshops are fully guided, safe, and adaptable for different age groups and subjects. Teachers often tell us how engaged their students are, how discussions continue long after the headsets come off, and how even reluctant learners come alive during a session.
That’s what education should feel like: immersive, inclusive, and inspiring.
A Teachers Heart, a Tech Vision
Even though I’ve moved into tech and entrepreneurship, my roots are firmly in teaching. I understand the pressures on teachers, the constraints of budgets and timetables, and the desire to make learning both engaging and meaningful. Everything we do at Discover VR is designed with teachers in mind — supporting the incredible work they already do by giving them powerful, hands-on tools to enhance learning.
My vision is for every student, no matter their background or location, to have access to truly immersive learning experiences. Because when students are excited about what they’re learning, the possibilities are endless.
Bringing Learning to Life
The first time I saw a class of Year 6 pupils gasp as they “stood” on the surface of Mars, I knew I’d made the right choice. One pupil said, “It felt like I was really there!” — and that’s exactly the point.
With VR, we’re not just teaching content; we’re creating memories. We’ve explored the human body from the inside, visited ancient civilisations, and even taken virtual field trips to the bottom of the ocean.
Every workshop is curriculum-linked, so teachers can easily integrate them into their lessons. And because Discover VR is mobile, we can reach schools anywhere — without them needing to invest in expensive tech.
Looking Ahead
My vision for Discover VR is simple: to make immersive learning accessible to every school, no matter their size or budget. I believe technology should enhance teaching, not replace it — and with the right tools, we can empower teachers to deliver lessons that truly stick.
If you’d like to bring Discover VR to your school — or simply learn more about what we do — we’d love to hear from you.
Let’s inspire curiosity, spark imagination, and make learning an adventure.
